No Fail French Bread – Melissa Coombs
My friend Melissa Coombs shared this recipe with me probably 20 years ago. She’s a food storage guru. You can find more of her recipes at My Food Storage Favorites
My family loves this bread with all kinds of Italian food. We also use it as the base for pizza rolls and soup bowls.

No Fail French Bread
This bread is soft and delicious and very easy to make. It's great for French toast, garlic bread, Italian choose toast, fancy braided breads, or just eating plain. It's a man-pleaser and sure to be a family favorite.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp yeast
- 2.5 cups warm water 105-110*
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 tbsp salt
- 5 tbsp oil
- 6 cups white flour
Instructions
-
Mix yeast, warm water, and sugar. Let the yeast bubble.
-
Add the remaining ingredients adding flour 1 cup at a time.
-
Knead in your KitchenAid for 10 minutes.
-
Let rise until double the size.
-
Punch down and divide into 2 French loaves or 3 regular bread pan loaves. I usually make two loaves and bake on a cookie sheet. You can make bread bowls by making dough balls the size of your choice.
-
Let rise again in a warm place until double the size, about 30 minutes.
-
Bale for 20 to 30 minutes at 400*. Shorter for soft crust and longer for thick and chewy crust.
