The Beautiful Moravian Star
Since moving to North Carolina many years ago, my husband and I have been fascinated with the Moravian culture and love the Moravian Stars. Once upon a time these beautiful stars were just for Christmas decorating but we’ve seen them used year round on porches and for backyard lighting. We always hang ours for the holidays. It’s the focal point of our front porch.
When Buffy came for Christmas she fell in love with the Moravian star so the following summer that was her birthday gift. Unlike me, she hangs it year-round on her porch! You would not believe the number of people who stop to talk to her about her “star” light. It beautifully finishes off her porch adding light and ambiance inside as well as outside.
Moravian stars have been around for over 200 years! They are perfect for decorating patios, porches, walkways, and outdoor seating areas. Hang one as a focal point, or hang multiples to create a magical display of light. The Moravian Star has a timeless appeal and will illuminate your chosen area in a unique way. We’ve seen hanging orbs for years but there is nothing as beautiful as this.
For a history of the Moravian star read this fascinating story.
You can find these 26 point stars in plastic, glass, and tin and in a variety of colors. Ideas are at the bottom of this post. We purchased ours at Old Salem, North Carolina. Old Salem is a historic district in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, that was originally settled by the Moravian community in 1753. Read about it here.
Not everyone can visit Old Salem but these stars sold at a variety of places. I’ve seen them at Lowe’s, boutiques, and online.
